India’s 8.7 crore MSMEs play a crucial role in the economy, contributing 31% to GDP, 35% to manufacturing output, and nearly 45% to exports. Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje highlighted the sector’s significance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
The substantial increase in MSME bank credit from Rs 10 lakh crore in 2014 to Rs 37 lakh crore by December 2025 showcases the government’s commitment to empowering entrepreneurs. Karandlaje announced the launch of various initiatives during the ‘MSME Day 2026’ celebrations to facilitate easier access to credit, markets, and quality services.
Emphasizing the MSME sector as the growth engine of the Indian economy, Karandlaje stressed the support provided by the Ministry of MSME in terms of digital assistance, skill development, technology, and marketing linkages. Entrepreneurs were acknowledged as vital partners in India’s development journey.
Bharat Khera, Secretary of the Ministry of MSME, outlined the sector’s role in economic growth and highlighted key initiatives and schemes. The Ministry introduced Multilingual Access on MSME Portals to enhance accessibility, offering services in all 22 Scheduled Indian languages and incorporating AI-enabled voice grievance redressal and document translation facilities.
