General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, who initiated the symbolic signing, emphasized its importance as a collective recommitment to the fundamental values and ideals of the Charter. The signing event was a preparatory step towards the UN Charter Day celebrations.
A Ramaswami Mudaliar, the leader of India’s delegation to the UN, originally signed the Charter on behalf of India in San Francisco on June 25, 1945. India’s early involvement as one of the UN’s founding members, even prior to gaining independence, highlights its longstanding engagement with multilateralism and global cooperation.
The commemoration of the UN Charter Day this year holds particular significance amidst challenges faced by the United Nations. The event serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to defend and uphold the Charter’s principles in the face of various pressures and attacks on the organization.
