As per the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), 14 out of 19 sub-sectors experienced double-digit growth in April 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. These sub-sectors represent around 60% of the services sector. Positive growth was observed across nearly all categories during this period.
Key sub-sectors that exhibited significant growth in April included Accommodation and Food (37.2%), Retail Trade (30.8%), Administrative and support services (28.7%), and Real Estate (27.7%). The release of sub-sectoral Index of Services Production (ISP) offers a monthly snapshot of short-term movements in India’s formal services sector, covering approximately 60% of the sector.
The ISP release marks a crucial step in enhancing India’s statistical system and improving the measurement of the services sector, which contributes over half of the country’s economic activity. The Technical Advisory Committee on Index of Services Production (TAC-ISP), formed in May 2025, played a significant role in guiding the compilation of ISP, ensuring methodological accuracy.
Data sources for the ISP include GST and Administrative Data, focusing on formal sector enterprises. Sectors not covered in the ISP are those linked to core government activities or dominated by non-market and informal sector activities. The ISP’s compilation employs a tailored approach based on data availability and nature, utilizing sources like GST for Wholesale Trade, Retail Trade, and various other services.
Different deflators are used for various sub-sectors, with Wholesale Price Index (WPI) acting as a deflator for wholesale trade. The monthly ISPs are currently published on an experimental basis, allowing MoSPI to assess data quality, test resilience, and gather feedback from stakeholders and users to enhance the statistical reporting process.
