India’s space economy is expected to expand significantly over the next decade, soaring from $8 billion to an estimated $40-45 billion. Currently representing around 2-3% of the global space economy, India aims to boost its share to 8% by 2030. This growth is fueled by policy reforms, increased private sector involvement, and the commercialization of space technologies.
Structural reforms in recent years have played a crucial role in this growth trajectory. Initiatives such as opening up the space sector to private entities, the establishment of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), and the formation of NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) to commercialize ISRO-developed technologies have been instrumental.
Private participation in India’s space sector has surged, with the number of space startups skyrocketing from just one in 2014 to over 400 as of February 2026. Investments in Indian space startups have surpassed $500 million, with a significant portion of nearly $150 million attracted in 2025 alone.
To further stimulate investment and innovation, the government has introduced various measures, including relaxed foreign direct investment norms, a Rs 1,000 crore venture capital fund, a Rs 500 crore technology adoption fund, and startup support schemes. Commercial activities in the sector have gained momentum, as reflected in NSIL’s revenue growth from Rs 321.77 crore in FY22 to Rs 3,246.09 crore in FY25, showcasing the increasing demand for Indian space technologies and services.
India’s presence in the global space arena is expanding, with the launch of 399 foreign satellites since 2014 and the signing of over 300 space cooperation agreements with 61 countries and five multilateral organizations. The country’s ambitious space missions, including the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, the Venus Orbiter Mission, and upcoming lunar exploration projects, underline its transition from a scientific pursuit to a key driver of economic growth, innovation, and technological self-reliance.
