India’s steel sector continued its growth momentum in May, with crude steel production reaching 14.21 million tonnes, marking a 2.9% increase year-on-year. Hot metal production also saw a 2.0% growth, while pig iron output reached 0.77 million tonnes, showing a 1.1% increase.
In May, finished steel production in India stood at 13.94 million tonnes, reflecting a notable 7.7% growth. The consumption of finished steel during the same period was recorded at 14.33 million tonnes, indicating a 9.0% year-on-year growth.
The steel ministry reported that crude steel production for April-May totaled 28.04 million tonnes, up by 2.7% compared to the same period last year. Additionally, finished steel consumption during April-May 2026 was 27.36 million tonnes, showing an 8.7% growth, driven by sustained demand from various sectors.
Steel imports in May reached 0.69 million tonnes, while exports stood at 0.51 million tonnes, marking significant year-on-year growth rates of 62.5% and 29.9%, respectively, over May 2025 levels. During April-May 2026, India operated as a net importer with 1.37 million tonnes of imports and 0.98 million tonnes of exports.
