Two seeded players, Amanda Anisimova ranked No. 6 and Ekaterina Alexandrova ranked No. 12, have pulled out of the 2026 Mutua Madrid Open due to injuries. Anisimova cited a wrist injury, while Alexandrova mentioned a lower back injury.
Maria Sakkari has stepped in as the No. 33 seed in place of Alexandrova, and Magdalena Frech has replaced Anisimova as the No. 34 seed, both receiving first-round byes. Janice Tjen and Katerina Siniakov, the original opponents of Sakkari and Frech, will now face qualifiers or lucky losers due to the replacements.
Anisimova, who last competed in Miami and withdrew from Charleston due to an unspecified injury, has been absent from the court. Alexandrova, after withdrawing from Charleston with a lower back issue, returned briefly but faced early exits in Linz and Stuttgart.
Several other players have also withdrawn from the Madrid Open due to various injuries, including Sonay Kartal, Varvara Gracheva, Maya Joint, Emma Navarro, Emma Raducanu, and Marketa Vondrousova. The tournament, set at the Caja Magica, will witness 96 female players vying for victory, showcasing top WTA talent in the heart of Spain.
Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka aims to make history by clinching a record fourth title at the Caja Magica, a milestone that would establish her as the most successful player in the tournament’s history.
