The India Meteorological Department has issued a strong warning for an intense heatwave in Madhya Pradesh over the next five days, with red and orange alerts in place in various districts. Temperatures exceeding 44 degrees Celsius persist in many areas, prompting caution from the Meteorological Centre in Bhopal to residents, especially vulnerable groups, to take preventive measures against heat-related illnesses. The bulletin forecasts the heatwave conditions to continue until at least May 26, with certain districts facing extreme risks.
Daytime temperatures are anticipated to range between 44 and 47 degrees Celsius in numerous locations, with high minimum temperatures as well. The prevailing high-pressure system and delayed monsoon advancement are cited as causes for the scorching conditions. The southwest monsoon’s slow progress, along with a western disturbance and cyclonic circulation over northwest Pakistan, may offer limited relief to Madhya Pradesh in the near future.
Health authorities and the IMD have issued detailed advisories to the public, emphasizing the importance of staying hydrated, avoiding sun exposure during peak hours, and wearing appropriate clothing. Farmers are advised to adjust irrigation timings, provide shade and water for livestock, and refrain from using fertilisers and pesticides during extreme heat. The ongoing heatwave has resulted in a rise in dehydration cases in hospitals, prompting local administrations to implement heat action plans in affected areas.
The IMD urges citizens to stay alert and follow official updates regularly as the state grapples with the prolonged heatwave. Despite hopes for easing conditions post-May 26 with the approaching southwest monsoon, the immediate focus remains on ensuring public safety and mitigating the heatwave’s impact.
