Iran criticized the United Nations’ stance on recent military actions in the region, justifying its strikes on US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait as self-defense following US-Israeli attacks that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Tehran accused the US of using Gulf states’ territories as launchpads and called on the UN to press these countries to stop supporting such actions and hold the aggressors accountable under international law.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, emphasized the use of the term “Persian Gulf” in accordance with UN directives from 1994 and 1999. Baqaei clarified that Iran’s actions were not acts of aggression but legitimate exercises of its right to self-defense under international law. He urged countries to stop enabling the US to use their territories for attacks against Iran and emphasized the need to hold aggressors responsible for violating international law.
Referring to UN directives from 1994 and 1999, the Iranian Foreign Ministry reiterated the importance of using the term “Persian Gulf” in all UN texts. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern over the escalating tensions in the Gulf region, including various attacks. He called on all parties to show restraint, avoid further escalation, and take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation. Guterres urged Iran and the US to resume negotiations promptly and address outstanding issues through diplomatic means.
