Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf stated that Iran will not engage in negotiations with the United States for a final agreement until specific clauses of a recently signed peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) are put into effect. Qalibaf, who also leads Iran’s negotiating team, highlighted that Iran’s recent visit to Switzerland aimed at enforcing the MoU’s provisions to end the conflict on various fronts, including Lebanon, among other key points.
He emphasized that unless the initial five paragraphs of the MoU are fulfilled, the implementation of the remaining clauses will not commence. Qalibaf mentioned that Iran, the US, and Lebanon have agreed to establish a joint committee to enforce a ceasefire, end the conflict in Lebanon, and protect Lebanese sovereignty. Representatives from Iran and the US have already been designated for this purpose.
Qalibaf added that Iran is committed to pursuing dialogue but will respond with strength when necessary. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced that Iran had agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons ahead of upcoming negotiations in Doha. Trump expressed optimism about diplomatic and military progress, asserting that Iran would not be allowed to develop nuclear arms.
Trump mentioned that officials were en route to Qatar for talks scheduled the following day. He expressed hope for the negotiations, citing recent military actions against Iran’s nuclear program as a factor in the US’s advantageous position. The MoU to end the regional conflict was signed by Iran and the US on June 18, with technical discussions commencing in Switzerland on June 22 after consultations between both countries’ delegations with the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar.
