Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has urged the European Union (EU) to take “decisive” action against Ukraine following an attack on an Iranian commercial ship in the Caspian Sea. Araghchi made this plea during a phone call with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, where they discussed recent regional developments. He condemned the Ukrainian attack and called on the EU, UN Security Council, and international community to hold the “perpetrators” and supporters accountable.
The discussions also covered the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the necessity for diplomatic efforts to manage regional tensions. Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine’s charge d’affaires in Tehran to formally protest the “hostile and criminal” act. The ministry stated that the attack, which occurred earlier, resulted in the vessel exploding, causing the death of a sailor and injuring another.
In response to the incident, Iranian officials emphasized their country’s non-involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. They warned that the attack could escalate the conflict and insecurity in the region. Iran reiterated its commitment to defending its national interests and security, cautioning Ukraine about the repercussions of its actions.
