A senior Iranian diplomat clarified that technical discussions between Iran and the United States were not planned for this week. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, dismissed reports of talks in Qatar, emphasizing ongoing consultations with Qatar on issues related to the U.S. fulfilling obligations under a recent peace memorandum. The technical negotiations between the two countries commenced in Switzerland on June 22.
Mehdi Fazaeli, from Iran’s Supreme Leader’s Office of Preservation and Publication, revealed that the planned technical talks on the same day were canceled by Iran due to recent U.S. strikes and delays in meeting Tehran’s conditions under the memorandum. Despite initial plans for talks in Switzerland focusing on Iran’s nuclear program, escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz led to a shift to Doha, with a new emphasis on shipping security in the region.
The U.S. and Iran have agreed to temporarily halt mutual attacks and engage in discussions in Doha to address their differences over the Strait of Hormuz. As technical talks progress, vessels are permitted to move freely in the area. Originally set for Switzerland, the talks’ relocation to Doha reflects the evolving focus on ensuring shipping security in the vital waterway.
