Iranian Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, emphasized the shortcomings of a global security framework reliant on a “single power” during the upcoming 2026 BRICS Summit. This critique comes amidst the ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, underscoring Tehran’s advocacy for a multipolar approach to global security and prosperity within the expanded BRICS grouping. Fathali’s remarks stress the need for collective strategies in today’s intricate and swiftly changing world order.
Fathali’s statement, shared on X, underscores the inadequacy of a security model based solely on assurances from a dominant power in the current complex global landscape. The envoy’s comments were made following the conclusion of the two-day BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, where discussions centered on enhancing multilateralism and fostering a more inclusive global framework under India’s leadership of the group.
During the recent BRICS meeting, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the commitment to fortifying multilateralism, sustainable development, and economic resilience within the grouping. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who chaired the gathering, highlighted the necessity for reformed multilateralism and advocated for changes in the United Nations Security Council to ensure a stable and equitable international system. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also emphasized the imperative of Security Council reforms for the United Nations’ survival, urging BRICS nations to leverage their collective influence to reshape global governance.
Araghchi’s call for a Security Council that authentically represents all global regions underscores Iran’s push for a more inclusive and trustworthy multilateral system. He critiqued the prevailing global governance framework for favoring unilateralism over multilateralism and emphasized the need to address the crisis stemming from selective application of international law and unilateral sanctions. The Iranian minister’s remarks reflect a broader sentiment among BRICS nations to strengthen global institutions and restore faith in multilateral cooperation.
