Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that any US efforts to enforce a naval blockade and maritime restrictions on Iran are destined to fail. Pezeshkian highlighted this during the Persian Gulf National Day celebrations on April 30. He emphasized that the Gulf’s security relies on collective cooperation and respect for coastal countries’ sovereignty, rejecting unilateral foreign impositions.
The President underscored that imposing a blockade or maritime restrictions in the region violates international law, jeopardizing regional interests and global peace. Pezeshkian reiterated Iran’s commitment to safeguarding security in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz while upholding principles of navigation freedom and maritime safety, except for hostile nations. He attributed any insecurity in the waterway to the United States and Israel.
Iran has consistently opposed foreign interventions, viewing them as escalatory and detrimental to regional peace. Pezeshkian pointed out that during recent conflicts, US military bases in West Asia failed to ensure security for host countries, allowing Iran to retaliate against attacks. He emphasized that Iran’s security role in the region is crucial and must be respected by all parties involved.
The United States initiated a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz after unsuccessful negotiations with Iran in Islamabad on April 11 and 12. The ceasefire agreement, following a 40-day conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, commenced on April 8. The conflict began with joint attacks by the US and Israel on Iranian cities, resulting in casualties, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
