Iran’s suspected attempt to target a military base in the Indian Ocean has raised concerns in Washington. US officials have cautioned that Tehran’s missile program is expanding its reach towards waters close to India.

Lawmakers have highlighted a reported launch towards Diego Garcia, a crucial US-UK military facility in the Indian Ocean. This incident underscores Iran’s ability to exert influence far beyond its immediate vicinity.

General Stephen Whiting, head of US Space Command, emphasized the close connection between Iran’s missile and space initiatives. He noted, “Ballistic missiles are space rockets.”

US officials have pointed out that Iran has acquired essential components for long-range strikes. Senator Tom Cotton expressed the possibility of Tehran combining launch systems with re-entry vehicle technology to enhance its capabilities.

Admiral Richard Carroll, head of US Strategic Command, acknowledged Iran’s demonstration of core capabilities. He stated, “They’ve showcased that technology.”

Lawmakers have raised concerns about Iran’s space launch program potentially supporting missile development. They observed similarities in technology between satellite launch systems and long-range missiles.

The discussion underscored the risks posed to US forces and allies in the Indo-Pacific region. The Indian Ocean, a critical route for global trade and energy supplies, was previously not considered within Iran’s striking range, a perception that is now evolving.

Officials also highlighted worries regarding cyber threats. Whiting cautioned that cyber vulnerabilities in space systems could be exploited by adversaries, as cyber attacks are cost-effective and challenging to trace.

Lawmakers emphasized that Iran’s expanding capabilities pose challenges for security planning. They advocated for enhanced missile warning systems and improved space-based tracking to address these evolving threats.

The United States has closely monitored Iran’s missile and nuclear programs, viewing them as significant sources of instability in the region. Iran’s consistent progress in its missile program, supported by parallel advancements in space initiatives, has been a cause for concern.

For India, Iran’s increasing presence in the Indian Ocean introduces a new security dimension in a region critical for trade and energy flows.
