Israeli and Lebanese officials are set to have a second round of peace talks in Washington on Thursday. The talks will involve Israel’s Ambassador in Washington, Yechiel Leiter, and his Lebanese counterpart, Nada Hamadeh Moawad. The meeting, to be mediated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will also include staff from all three sides.
The upcoming talks follow a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, which began after weeks of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The Lebanese delegation will be led by former Lebanese Ambassador to the United States, Simon Karam. The negotiations aim to stop hostilities, end the Israeli occupation of southern areas, and deploy the army to the internationally recognized southern border.
The talks are seen as crucial in deciding between continued conflict with its associated costs or a peaceful resolution. The ceasefire, initiated following an announcement by US President Donald Trump, marks a significant step towards potential peace in the region.
