The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is considering a budget adjustment to appoint Pep Guardiola as the new head coach of the men’s national team. Senior FIGC officials Paolo Maldini and advisor Leonardo recently met with Guardiola in Barcelona to discuss a long-term vision for Italian football, extending beyond the national team to revamp the entire structure.
Despite financial constraints, the federation is willing to make a significant exception to secure Guardiola’s services. Italian FA president Giovanni Malago acknowledged the financial challenges but suggested that special provisions could be made for this high-profile appointment. Malago mentioned the need for financial caution in the short to medium term but hinted at accommodating a prominent figure like Guardiola.
Guardiola is being positioned as a key figure in an ambitious “Azzurro project” aimed at rebuilding Italian football from grassroots levels to the senior team. Following Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup for the third time, the proposal seeks to bring about substantial changes within the federation. Guardiola, who recently became a free agent after leaving Manchester City, is now contemplating this new opportunity.
The renowned coach left Manchester City after a successful 10-year tenure, during which he achieved remarkable success, including winning 20 major trophies and leading the team to multiple Premier League titles. Guardiola’s departure from City marked the end of an era, with his tenure characterized by significant achievements and a high win percentage.
