Italy has announced plans to continue its military presence south of the Litani River in southern Lebanon even after the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) withdraws in 2027. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crossetto revealed this during a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Beirut, where he highlighted Italy’s commitment to supporting the Lebanese Army in upholding security and stability in the region. Crossetto also mentioned that other European nations are considering a similar course of action. Italy is actively engaging in diplomatic efforts to assist in stabilizing southern Lebanon and is closely monitoring the ongoing negotiations in the country. Crossetto emphasized the importance of avoiding tensions in the region, stating that it is in the interest of all parties involved, and called for Israel to recognize this reality. President Aoun expressed Lebanon’s readiness to welcome the participation of Italy and other European countries in any potential force that may replace UNIFIL post-2027 withdrawal. Aoun noted that such a force would play a crucial role in helping the Lebanese Army maintain security and stability along the southern border following Israel’s withdrawal. The UN Security Council recently extended UNIFIL’s mandate until December 31, 2026, ahead of its scheduled withdrawal. A ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel has been in effect since November 27, 2024. Despite this, Israel has conducted sporadic strikes in Lebanon with the aim of neutralizing Hezbollah threats. Recent direct talks between Israel and Lebanon have focused on issues such as Hezbollah’s disarmament and the return of residents to southern border villages in Lebanon.
