Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto expressed optimism about the upcoming NATO Summit in Ankara, highlighting the commitment of each country to fulfill its obligations. Crosetto mentioned that the summit was well-organized, with no major issues anticipated compared to previous meetings. He also noted the brevity of the summit, mentioning the potential actions of US President Donald Trump.
Crosetto emphasized the strong transatlantic relations with the US, stating that the dialogue remains robust at an institutional level. He acknowledged Trump’s approach to pressuring allies, noting that it is a tactic to elicit responses. The Defence Minister underscored the importance of defense spending, stating that it should not come at the expense of social programs like healthcare and welfare.
In terms of international dynamics, Crosetto highlighted the technological competition among major powers, particularly focusing on raw materials, rare earths, and energy. He pointed out that Italy, Germany, and Japan, due to their post-World War II constitutions, are restricted from declaring war independently and must operate within alliances or international mandates. Crosetto also addressed controversies surrounding US flights from Italian bases, emphasizing the need to avoid unnecessary disputes that could strain bilateral relations.
