Italy’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, has called on Hezbollah to adhere to a US-brokered ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel. Tajani emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy for achieving peace, stating that the recent agreement is a positive step towards stability. He urged Hezbollah to respect the deal, highlighting the responsibility of Lebanon’s legitimate government in maintaining territorial integrity.
The ceasefire deal, negotiated through US-mediated talks, includes the evacuation of Hezbollah operatives from a designated area near the Israeli border. Tajani expressed Italy’s support for the peace efforts and emphasized the need for Hezbollah to refrain from provoking Israel through missile attacks. He also stressed the role of the Lebanese armed forces in ensuring the country’s security.
Italy has been actively involved in training the Lebanese army through a military mission separate from the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon. Tajani mentioned Italy’s readiness to enhance cooperation in cutting off financial support to Hezbollah’s military wing. Additionally, Italy plans to continue its military presence in Lebanon and assist in strengthening the capabilities of the Lebanese armed forces post the UNIFIL withdrawal.
