The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has promised to enhance athlete protection following a female athlete’s complaint of “inappropriate physical contact” during an entry security screening at the World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals. In response to the allegation, the ITTF, World Table Tennis, and local organizers expressed deep concern, emphasizing the importance of ensuring athletes’ safety, respect, and well-being at all times. They have assured full support and assistance to the affected athlete and are conducting a thorough fact-finding and safeguarding investigation.
The ITTF, along with WTT and the Local Organizing Committee, is actively engaged in addressing the issue and has affirmed a zero-tolerance policy towards any behavior that jeopardizes athletes’ welfare. They are committed to a comprehensive review of the situation to prevent any recurrence of such incidents in the future. Zheng Jiaqi, the coach of the Chinese Taipei women’s team, highlighted the seriousness of the incident involving inappropriate physical contact and potential sexual harassment during a pre-match security check.
The ongoing London World Team Table Tennis Championships, scheduled until May 10, continues amidst the investigation and efforts to uphold the dignity and safety of all participants.
