In a milestone for Madhya Pradesh’s agriculture, Jabalpur’s peas and water chestnuts have been granted the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, making it the first region in India to achieve this dual recognition. The GI tag, conferred by the GI Registry in Chennai, is set to enhance the brand value of Jabalpuri peas, already part of the ‘One District-One Product’ initiative by the Central government. This official recognition is expected to attract better prices for farmers both domestically and internationally, potentially boosting their income.
The Maikalsuta Farmer Producer Company based in Jabalpur applied for the GI tag for these agricultural products, known for their exceptional quality and high productivity due to the fertile soils and unique microclimate of the Narmada Valley. The nutrient-rich waters of the Narmada river and ideal growing conditions in the region are credited by agricultural experts for the distinct flavor and characteristics of Jabalpuri peas and water chestnuts, which have a strong demand in local and out-of-state markets.
With the registration in the GI Registry’s journal, these products now benefit from legal protection that preserves their unique geographical identity at national and international levels. The GI tag is anticipated to create new opportunities for farmers by increasing market visibility, enabling premium pricing, and fostering export prospects, ultimately leading to improved incomes for local growers and contributing to the economic development of the area.
This historic achievement of obtaining GI tags for peas and water chestnuts from Jabalpur is hailed as a significant milestone in India’s agricultural landscape, positioning Jabalpur prominently as a hub for high-value, geographically authenticated produce. The GI tag not only endorses the quality, reputation, and origin-linked uniqueness of Jabalpuri peas and water chestnuts but also protects them from imitation, providing consumers with assurance of authenticity. This recognition is seen as a catalyst for encouraging farmers to adopt modern cultivation methods, conserve traditional varieties, and invest in value addition, thereby strengthening the rural economy and promoting agro-tourism in Jabalpur.
Farmers and stakeholders have warmly welcomed this development, recognizing it as a transformative stride towards sustainable growth and global acknowledgment for their longstanding produce.
