Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed skepticism about Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s vision of Amaravati as the state capital, suggesting that it will not materialize. Instead, he advocated for the ‘Mavigun’ region as a feasible alternative.
Jagan Mohan Reddy emphasized that Amaravati’s status as the state capital is impractical, foreseeing a future where Andhra Pradesh may lack a designated capital. He stressed that ‘Mavigun’ (Machilipatnam, Vijayawada, and Guntur) offers a ready-made solution as the state capital.
Asserting the advantages of ‘Mavigun,’ Jagan Mohan Reddy highlighted the existing infrastructure in the region, including a port in Machilipatnam, an international airport in Vijayawada, multiple national highways, railway stations, medical colleges, and educational institutions. He suggested that minimal government spending is required for connectivity improvements in ‘Mavigun.’
Jagan Mohan Reddy proposed a shift to ‘Mavigun’ instead of further investments in Amaravati, estimating that a fraction of the costs allocated to Amaravati over 5-7 years would suffice. He emphasized the need for a timely decision to prevent a future scenario where Andhra Pradesh lacks a capital city.
Highlighting the escalating costs associated with Amaravati’s development, Jagan Mohan Reddy criticized the expenditure on infrastructure projects in comparison to other states. He accused Chandrababu Naidu of awarding contracts to favored companies through questionable processes, leading to inflated costs and inefficiencies.
