Jaime Faria caused a major upset at the French Open qualifying by defeating former World No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov in a thrilling three-set match in Paris. Faria, a Portuguese player, came from a set down to secure a hard-fought 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(10-6) victory, advancing to the second round of qualifying and ending Dimitrov’s chances of entering the main draw at Roland Garros.
This defeat marks the first time since 2010 that Dimitrov will miss the main draw at the clay-court Grand Slam. Despite holding a break advantage in the deciding set and serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set, Dimitrov couldn’t hold off Faria’s strong comeback, leading to a final-set tiebreak where Faria maintained his composure.
Jaime Faria, who previously qualified for the Australian Open this year, will now face Colton Smith in the next round after Smith’s victory over Alvaro Guillen Meza. In other matches, Coleman Wong survived a tough battle against Billy Harris, Croatian Borna Gojo and Brazilian Gustavo Heide secured comfortable wins, and Dusan Lajovic faced disappointment with a loss to Jurij Rodionov, missing out on the Roland Garros main draw for the first time since 2013.
French Open qualifying witnessed impressive performances from various players, including David Goffin, Jesper de Jong, Daniel Jade, Federico Cina, and Michael Zheng, who all showcased their skills in the opening matches.
