Construction work on the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project officially started on Wednesday, with Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma launching the project at the Metro depot in Sitapura. Sharma emphasized the significance of the Metro as Jaipur’s future “lifeline.”
The Phase-2 project, inaugurated by the Chief Minister after a Metro ride, will see multiple phases of expansion in the upcoming years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project earlier, with the recent ceremony marking the commencement of construction. The ambitious project, costing Rs 13,370 crore, will be a joint effort between the Central and Rajasthan Governments.
Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation (RMRC) will construct a 41-kilometre corridor under Phase-2, connecting Prahladpura to Todi Mod with 36 Metro stations. This expansion aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Jaipur and enhance city-wide connectivity. The new corridor will link key destinations like Jaipur International Airport, Gandhinagar Railway Station, and the Sitapura Industrial Area.
The Phase-2 extension will integrate seamlessly with the existing Metro network, facilitating easier transfers for commuters. It is expected to reduce travel time for daily passengers, benefitting employees, students, and residents in southern Jaipur. The project also includes feeder bus services to improve regional connectivity, connecting nearby towns like Chaksu and Chomu.
The state Government’s Hariyalo Rajasthan campaign is tied to the Metro expansion, aiming to plant five lakh trees in Jaipur district alongside the project launch. This initiative seeks to enhance public transport, increase green cover, and reduce reliance on private vehicles to combat traffic congestion and air pollution. The Phase-2 expansion is set to revolutionize urban mobility in Jaipur, linking various areas through an efficient public transport system.
