External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Dhaka to offer condolences to BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman on the passing of his mother, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Jaishankar met with Rahman and delivered a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing deepest sympathies on behalf of India.
Acknowledging Khaleda Zia’s role in democracy, Jaishankar expressed optimism for enhancing India-Bangladesh relations post upcoming elections. The visit aimed to pay respects to Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister. Prime Minister Modi also mourned her demise, praising her historic leadership and contributions.
Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India shared photos of Jaishankar’s meeting with Rahman, highlighting India’s condolences and hopes for stronger ties. Thousands gathered in Dhaka to honor Khaleda Zia, with tight security measures in place. Zia, a three-time Prime Minister, passed away at 80 after battling illness, and will be laid to rest beside her husband in Dhaka.
