External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar revealed his recent conversation with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul regarding the ongoing West Asia conflict, now in its fourth week. Both ministers agreed to maintain close communication amidst evolving developments. This discussion follows a series of diplomatic engagements between the two leaders, including a meeting in Brussels on March 16 where they exchanged views on the conflict and reviewed bilateral cooperation.
In previous weeks, Jaishankar has actively engaged with various global counterparts as tensions escalate in the region. Discussions have included talks with Abbas Araghchi and foreign ministers from Gulf nations, emphasizing India’s diplomatic efforts to engage with all sides involved in the crisis. The conflict in West Asia originated from strikes by the United States and Israel on Tehran on February 28, resulting in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The situation has since broadened, involving multiple Gulf countries and raising concerns over strategic passages like the Strait of Hormuz. India’s response to the crisis has been characterized by a balanced diplomatic approach, maintaining engagement with all regional actors without aligning with any specific side. This strategy underscores India’s consistent efforts to navigate the crisis with prudence.
