External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had a phone call with Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos to talk about the current situation in West Asia. Jaishankar shared on social media that they exchanged views on the Gulf situation.
Recently, Cyprus reported that two drones heading towards the RAF base in Akrotiri were intercepted. The Cyprus government mentioned that British aircraft swiftly handled the drones, preventing any casualties despite minor damage caused by one drone hitting the runway.
Following the incident, non-essential personnel were evacuated from the base, and residents of Akrotiri village were instructed to leave. UK authorities are investigating the drone attacks, which occurred within hours of each other.
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides discussed the matter with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who expressed serious concerns about European security and assured EU support for its members. The conflict in West Asia escalated after US-Israel joint strikes on Iran, leading to retaliatory drone and missile attacks across the region.
During a recent meeting in Washington, Kombos congratulated Jaishankar on the India-US trade deal and the Free Trade Agreement between India and the European Union.
