External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Manila to address India’s concerns about the safety of Indian seafarers in the region. The discussions between the two ministers encompassed various aspects of bilateral relations, including trade, investment, energy, connectivity, science, technology, and mobility. Jaishankar highlighted the issue following an attack on the MV Golden Leo, a commercial vessel that resulted in the loss of four Indian lives.

EAM Jaishankar expressed worry about the safety of Indian seafarers after the recent attack on MV Golden Leo, which led to the deaths of four Indians. In response to the incident, India summoned the Russian Charge d’Affaires to convey strong concerns about the attack on the vessel. The vessel was targeted while departing the port of Odesa, with 17 crew members on board, including five Indian nationals.

During a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov discussed various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine and West Asia. Lavrov updated PM Modi on the progress in bilateral cooperation since their last meeting in December 2025 for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. Lavrov was in India for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and also held discussions with EAM Jaishankar on bilateral ties and global issues of mutual interest.
