External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had a brief meeting with Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq in Dhaka before the funeral of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. The Chief Advisor of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, shared a photo of the meeting on social media.
Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka to attend Khaleda Zia’s funeral, where he conveyed India’s condolences to her son, Tarique Rahman. He also delivered a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Rahman.
Acknowledging Khaleda Zia’s role in democracy, Jaishankar expressed optimism about enhancing India-Bangladesh relations after the upcoming elections. He met with Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, to convey India’s condolences and discuss strengthening bilateral ties.
Khaleda Zia, a former Prime Minister and leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, passed away at the age of 80. She was laid to rest with full State honors in Dhaka alongside her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman. Prime Minister Modi expressed deep sorrow over her demise, praising her historic leadership and contributions to Bangladesh and India relations.
