Jamia Millia Islamia’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mazhar Asif, spearheaded the university’s festivities for the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 at the Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi Sports Complex. The event saw over 600 participants, including faculty members, staff, students, and community members, coming together to commemorate the occasion. They engaged in yoga activities themed “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” following the Ministry of AYUSH’s guidelines.
Energized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s live address, broadcasted on a large screen at the venue, Professor Asif guided the university in practicing yoga. He highlighted the importance of yoga’s holistic philosophy and its relevance in modern life. Emphasizing the essence of yoga, Professor Asif stressed the significance of a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and positive behavior for overall well-being.
The celebration, organized by the Games and Sports Department in collaboration with the Office of the Dean, Students’ Welfare, featured demonstrations of various mudras and asanas by yoga teacher Professor Badrul Islam Kairanvi. Kairanvi, following the IDY 2026 theme, focused on ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’ and elucidated yoga’s role in managing lifestyle diseases, promoting flexibility, and maintaining healthy internal organs. He also discussed yoga’s benefits for mental and physical well-being, including its therapeutic effects on chronic pain and inflammation.
