The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau has initiated legal action regarding a Rs 5.57 crore food grain scam in the Karnah area of Kupwara district. Five officials from the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, along with nine Fair Price Shop dealers, are implicated in the alleged embezzlement.
An FIR, numbered 02/2026, has been filed under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The scam came to light following departmental inspections that uncovered significant shortages of government food grains.
The investigation revealed a substantial shortage of 4,175.89 quintals of food grains, leading to a financial loss of over Rs 5.5 crore to the government exchequer. The misappropriation is believed to be a result of a criminal conspiracy involving both public servants and private individuals for personal gain.
The FIR targets five officials from the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, including two Assistant Storekeepers, and nine Fair Price Shop dealers. Search operations have been launched at various locations, and legal procedures are underway as per the law.
