Tensions escalated during the Ranji Trophy final when Jammu and Kashmir captain Paras Dogra was fined 50% of his match fee for headbutting Karnataka substitute fielder KV Aneesh on Day 2 of the match. The incident, which occurred during the 101st over of Jammu and Kashmir’s innings, led to a heated exchange between Dogra and Aneesh. Karnataka skipper Mayank Agarwal intervened to prevent the situation from worsening.
The altercation, described as one of the most volatile moments in recent domestic cricket finals, saw Dogra making contact with Aneesh’s helmet in what appeared to be a headbutt. Despite Dogra’s subsequent apology, Aneesh reportedly refused to accept it. Senior Karnataka players, including KL Rahul and Agarwal, also got involved in a verbal confrontation with Dogra following the incident.
The charged atmosphere continued as another confrontation unfolded between Karnataka’s Vijaykumar Vyshak and Jammu and Kashmir’s Kanhaiya Wadhawan during a run. Dogra, reflecting on the incident, downplayed its significance, attributing it to the intensity of playing in a final match. Wadhawan echoed similar sentiments, stating that such exchanges and sledging are common in cricket.
The incident has overshadowed the competitive spirit of the final match, tarnishing what was otherwise a high-quality contest. Dogra, a veteran in India’s domestic cricket scene at 41 years old, recently achieved the milestone of surpassing 10,000 runs in Ranji Trophy cricket, highlighting his enduring contribution and consistency.
