Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, kicked off a cyclothon at the Royal Springs Golf Course in Srinagar to celebrate World Bicycle Day. The event, part of the ‘My Youth My Pride’ initiative by the Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council, drew enthusiastic participation from cyclists, youths, students, and sports enthusiasts across the Valley. Chief Minister Abdullah unveiled the mascot, jersey, and promotional campaign for the upcoming Jammu Cyclothon, along with announcing dates for the event and introducing the Kashmir Cyclothon as a national-level competition to attract cyclists nationwide.
Interacting with participants, Chief Minister Abdullah commended the growing interest in cycling and stressed the significance of embracing active lifestyles for improved physical and mental well-being. He highlighted cycling as an eco-friendly mode of transportation that enhances public health and supports environmental conservation efforts. The Chief Minister also praised the Youth Services & Sports Department and the J&K Sports Council for their efforts in promoting mass participation in sports and recreational activities.
The cyclothon aimed to address issues like sedentary lifestyles, drug abuse, and excessive screen time among youth while promoting fitness and sports. Advocating the theme of ‘Say No to Drugs, No to Screen Addiction and Yes to Fitness & Sport,’ the event emphasized the importance of physical activity and community engagement. Minister for Youth Services & Sports Satish Sharma, Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, and other dignitaries were present at the event, which included a cycling awareness ride covering a 20-kilometer route from RSGC to Duck Park on Foreshore Road, with participants from various age groups.
