Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticized the BJP-led Central government, accusing it of using the delimitation process for ‘backdoor rule.’ He expressed disappointment over the delay in restoring statehood, emphasizing that the Centre has not fulfilled its promises despite assurances from various political entities.
Abdullah alleged that the delimitation exercise was aimed at consolidating power rather than enhancing democratic representation. He pointed out the BJP’s strategy to weaken opposition parties nationwide through tactics like ‘Operation Lotus,’ citing instances from different states.
The completion of the Jammu and Kashmir delimitation process in 2022 led to an increase in Assembly seats from 83 to 90. Abdullah stressed that the demand for statehood was not a request but a commitment made to the people, supported by major political parties in the 2024 elections.
Challenging the BJP, Abdullah questioned its candidates’ stance on statehood restoration during the elections. He urged the party to fulfill its promises and be transparent about its commitments to the public. The ruling National Conference has intensified its efforts for statehood restoration, planning a protest in Delhi on July 20.
