The Jammu and Kashmir government has taken swift action by ordering the immediate removal of a contentious book that glorified separatists and terrorists from school libraries. The Commissioner/Secretary of the J&K School Education Department, Ram Niwas Sharma, confirmed the withdrawal of the publication, initiating actions against those responsible for its approval.
The book in question, titled “Great Personalities and Legends,” was distributed to schools in June 2026 and subsequently recalled on July 3, 2026. The controversy arose when the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples’ Forum (JKPF) raised concerns that the book portrayed separatist leaders and terrorists as revered figures in the region.
Following the uproar, the Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Sunil Sharma, criticized the publication for promoting an anti-national narrative. He demanded an immediate withdrawal of the book, a thorough investigation, and accountability for those involved, including the Education Minister.
Amid mounting criticism over the book’s content, the government’s decision to remove it from school libraries has been met with approval from various quarters. Opposition parties and organizations had condemned the book for allegedly containing objectionable and anti-national material.
