Senior Jammu and Kashmir leader and Lok Sabha member Mian Altaf Ahmad had a lucky escape when a vehicle in his convoy was struck by a landslide on the Poonch-Jammu National Highway. Fortunately, Mian Altaf was unharmed, but one of the convoy’s vehicles was hit by debris.
Mian Altaf had been staying in Rajouri to assist flood victims and had been actively visiting areas affected by landslides and floods. The incident occurred as he was returning from flood-hit regions of Poonch district when a landslide hit one of the convoy vehicles on the Jammu-Poonch National Highway.
Despite the challenging weather conditions, Mian Altaf managed to reach Rajouri safely after the incident. The landslide was a result of heavy rainfall in the area, causing rocks to hit a vehicle in the convoy. Thankfully, Mian Altaf and all occupants remained uninjured.
Authorities have been cautioning against travel in landslide-prone areas due to the ongoing heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, leading to multiple landslides and road blockages. Mian Altaf had previously surveyed flood-affected regions in Poonch to evaluate the damage caused by the flash floods and continuous rains.
The recent incident underscores the dangers posed by the severe weather conditions in the region, emphasizing the importance of ongoing rescue and restoration efforts to ensure public safety amid the challenging circumstances.
