Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is contemplating a visit to South Korea later this month to engage in summit discussions with President Lee Jae Myung in Andong, his hometown located about 190 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The talks are expected to focus on economic security cooperation, particularly concerning energy and critical mineral supply chains, amidst the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Takaichi’s last visit to South Korea was in October, shortly after assuming office, where she met with President Lee during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju. In a reciprocal gesture, President Lee visited Japan in January and held a summit in Takaichi’s hometown of Nara Prefecture, marking a continuation of diplomatic exchanges between the two nations.
Recent discussions between South Korea and Japan have included the possibility of an acquisition and cross-servicing agreement (ACSA) to facilitate logistics, supplies, and services during contingencies. While Japan is keen on such an agreement, South Korea has expressed caution, primarily due to concerns about potential implications for military operations on the Korean Peninsula.
