Jishnu Dev Varma, a member of the Manikya royal dynasty of Tripura and former Governor of Telangana, took office as the 22nd Governor of Maharashtra in a ceremony held at Maharashtra Lok Bhavan in Mumbai. The oath was administered by Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar of the Bombay High Court in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other dignitaries.
After the swearing-in, Governor Varma received a ceremonial guard of honor from the Indian Navy. His appointment followed the election of the former State Governor as Vice President of India, leading to Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat assuming additional responsibilities in Maharashtra. The formalities included the reading of the appointment warrant by Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal, issued by President Droupadi Murmu in Hindi and English.
Prior to his role in Maharashtra, Jishnu Dev Varma served as the Governor of Telangana and held the position of Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura from 2018 to 2023, overseeing key portfolios. Known for his interest in art and culture, he actively contributed to the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and promoted its initiatives in Northeast India. Additionally, Varma is recognized as a writer and poet.
