The J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examinations has revealed the counselling timetable for 50 supernumerary seats in the new Medical Colleges of the union territory. Scheduled for 24th January, 2026, the physical counselling will select MBBS candidates from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence based on merit. These additional seats were sanctioned by the National Medical Council and will be distributed among seven new Government Medical Colleges in the UT.
All 50 selected MBBS candidates will be assigned to the medical colleges on the same day through the counselling process, considering both merit and preference. The detailed notification regarding this process has been released by the BOPEE and is available on their official website for candidates’ reference. Communication has been sent out to all 50 candidates through various channels to ensure they are informed about the proceedings.
The fate of 50 students from SMVDIME was uncertain following the National Medical Council’s decision to revoke recognition due to faculty and infrastructure deficiencies. The Sangharsh Samiti protested against admitting non-Hindu candidates, claiming the college was exclusively for Hindu candidates. However, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah clarified that the college did not specify minority status and received government funding. Despite admissions being merit-based, the Samiti opposed the enrollment of 14 Muslim candidates.
