J&K Government to Introduce Bill on Drug Abuse in Legislative Assembly Session

The J&K government plans to present a bill addressing drug abuse during the ongoing legislative assembly session, as stated by Sakina Itoo, the Minister for Health and Medical Education. The minister revealed that the rules for drug de-addiction have been finalized and forwarded to the law department. Since 2022, a total of 49,276 cases of drug abuse have been recorded in the region.

In a session of the Legislative Assembly, Sakina Itoo confirmed the government’s intention to introduce the bill on drug abuse. She mentioned that the bill has been drafted and will be tabled during the current assembly session. Additionally, NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq emphasized the importance of educating about the harmful effects of drug addiction in schools through a bill he had previously introduced.

The government is also in the process of concluding the drug de-addiction rules, as disclosed by the Minister. She informed that the rules have been formulated and submitted to the Law Department for review. Notably, the data shows that 49,276 instances of drug abuse have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir since 2022, with 16,759 cases in Kashmir and 32,517 in Jammu.
