Joe Root is set to make a surprising comeback as the England captain for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval. This decision comes after Ben Stokes was ruled out due to an off-field incident involving him and pace bowler Gus Atkinson. Stokes and Atkinson breached the team’s curfew by being at a London nightclub, where an England security member was reportedly involved in an altercation with a Saracens rugby player named Totoa Auvaa.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that neither Stokes nor Atkinson will be considered for selection while investigations are ongoing. Despite Harry Brook being the vice-captain, the selectors have opted for Root to lead the team. Root’s appointment marks his return to the captaincy role he held from 2017 to 2022, succeeding Stokes who took over after Root’s resignation.
In addition to the captaincy change, England has included Jofra Archer and Jordan Cox in the squad following their victory in the first Test at Lord’s. The Cricket Regulator is conducting a separate investigation into the nightclub incident, which may take several weeks to conclude. Stokes, 35, is taking time to evaluate his future options, with the ECB denying claims that he has been asked to step down as captain.
This development poses a challenge for England as they aim to win the series without Stokes and Atkinson. Stokes, known for his all-round contributions, plays a vital role in the team’s balance and strategy. Atkinson, who showed improvement in the first Test, will miss the opportunity to play at his home ground, The Oval. The absence of these key players presents a chance for others like Archer and spin-bowling all-rounder Rehan Ahmed to step up and fill the void.
