Jonty Rhodes, the former South Africa fielding legend and current co-owner of the Rotterdam franchise in the European T20 Premier League (ETPL), highlighted the challenging environment for bowlers in the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to the Impact Player rule. This rule has led to a batting-dominated scenario, leaving bowlers facing immense pressure to perform.
The ongoing IPL 2026 season has seen bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah struggling, emphasizing the debate on whether the tournament’s rules heavily favor batsmen. Rhodes pointed out that the additional batter in the team, allowed by the Impact Player rule, enables aggressive play throughout the innings, making it tough for bowlers to maintain control.
Rhodes stressed the crucial role of exceptional fielding in supporting bowlers who are under constant attack from aggressive batters. He emphasized the significance of fielders making impactful contributions through spectacular catches or run-outs to turn the game in their team’s favor.
Rhodes also noted that leagues like the European T20 Premier League, which do not have the Impact Player rule, strive to offer a more balanced competition by valuing all-rounders and naturally limiting batting depth.
