Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes, known for his fielding prowess, has transitioned into a co-owner role for the Rotterdam franchise in the European T20 Premier League (ETPL). Alongside him, fellow South Africans Faf du Plessis and Heinrich Klaasen are also co-owners of the Rotterdam team. Rhodes, having previously coached in Sweden, aims to leverage his experience to positively impact European cricket through the ETPL.
Rhodes shared insights from his time in Sweden, emphasizing the enthusiasm and hunger among European cricketers for exposure to elite players and top-notch infrastructure. This experience motivated him to seize the opportunity to co-own a franchise in the ETPL, shifting from a coaching role to an ownership position. He envisions enhancing the existing cricket platform in Europe by introducing renowned players and coaches through the league.
With a focus on fostering year-round competitive opportunities for players outside traditional cricketing hubs, Rhodes aims to infuse a South African essence into the Rotterdam franchise. By structuring the team with a South African touch, he intends to provide continuous exposure to cricket practices and club cricket in South Africa for Rotterdam players. This strategic approach seeks to elevate the standard of cricket in Europe beyond the ETPL’s limited duration.
Rhodes envisions the ETPL not just as a cricket competition but as a means to introduce the sport to a broader European audience. By engaging with sports enthusiasts who may not have cricket backgrounds, Rhodes aims to educate and attract individuals from diverse sporting backgrounds like football, hockey, and tennis. He believes in the potential for individuals from varied sports disciplines to transition into cricket players with the right exposure and training.
As the co-owner of the Rotterdam franchise, Rhodes prioritizes building a sustainable cricket ecosystem that extends beyond the league’s inaugural season. While he won’t be involved in coaching, Rhodes is committed to enhancing all facets of the franchise’s operations, emphasizing local management, logistics, and grassroots development. His goal is to leave a lasting impact on Dutch cricket by strengthening the cricketing infrastructure and community through the franchise’s involvement.
