Judicial officers appointed by the Calcutta High Court are tasked with reviewing voter identity documents marked as having “logical discrepancies” by the Election Commission of India. They will provide daily progress updates to the Calcutta High Court regarding the status of this adjudication process. The initiative, following Supreme Court directives, began smoothly on Monday after overcoming initial technical challenges.
Efforts are underway to complete the adjudication process within the set deadline of February 28 for the final electoral roll in West Bengal. The judicial officers, as per Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam’s instructions, must submit daily reports outlining the number of cases reviewed, decisions made, and the overall progress of the adjudication.
A significant concern revolves around the timely completion of adjudicating approximately 50 lakh voter documents flagged for “logical discrepancies” before the February 28 deadline. Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal expressed confidence in resolving technical issues promptly, ensuring a smooth continuation of the adjudication process. The Calcutta High Court is actively overseeing the process following the Supreme Court’s mandate for judicial supervision in resolving discrepancies in voters’ identity documents.
