In a positive development for Madhya Pradesh’s horticultural heritage, the renowned Jumbo Custard Apple (Sitafal) from Seoni district has been officially awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai. This certification, granted in June, acknowledges the distinct qualities of these large fruits grown mainly in the wild and natural areas of the Bhutbandhani region within the Chhapara block of Seoni. The GI tag specifically refers to Seoni’s unique variety, distinguishing it from Seoni Malwa in Narmadapuram (Hoshangabad) district.
These custard apples are famous for their remarkable size, often ranging from 200 grams to a whopping 1 kilogram, exceptional sweetness, creamy texture, and rich nutritional content. The larger size and distinctive flavor of these fruits, compared to other varieties, are attributed to the region’s special soil, climate, and traditional farming methods in the forested regions. The application for the GI tag was submitted in 2023 by members of the Bhutbandhani Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO), led by Sadam Singh Barkade and Rajkumar Bhalavi, in partnership with the state Horticulture Department.
After a thorough three-year evaluation process involving documentation of geographical specifics and quality standards, the registry approved the tag, granting legal protection against counterfeiting and increasing market value. Local farmers, particularly approximately 3,000 tribal families engaged in custard apple cultivation, are thrilled about this development. The GI tag is anticipated to create opportunities for better pricing, exports, branding, and tourism-related ventures. It is poised to position Seoni Jumbo Sitafal as a premium offering in both domestic and international markets, akin to other GI-tagged fruits such as Beed Custard Apple from Maharashtra.
Officials from the Horticulture Department emphasized that the tag will empower FPOs, encourage sustainable farming practices, and safeguard traditional wisdom. This acknowledgment not only honors Seoni’s biodiversity but also ensures economic progress for rural communities, stated a senior official. This milestone comes as Madhya Pradesh strengthens its GI repertoire, with recent additions like Indori Malwi potato and Ratlam Garadu. For Seoni, this recognition signifies a significant triumph that underscores the potential of native produce when supported by institutional backing.
