The Centre has approved the appointment of Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta, currently serving as a judge in the Allahabad High Court, as the new Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. This decision comes following a recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium, chaired by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, after the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Guhanathan Narendar, on January 9.
Justice Gupta, born on October 9, 1964, has a background in law, having graduated from Lucknow University in 1987. He started his legal career as an advocate before being appointed as an Additional Judge in the Allahabad High Court in 2013. He later became a Permanent Judge in 2015 and currently serves as a senior judge in the Allahabad High Court. Justice Gupta is also involved in various legal committees and is set to retire on October 8, 2026.
Having previously served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Gupta brings a wealth of experience to his new role as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. His appointment will take effect upon the retirement of Chief Justice Narendar on January 9.
