The Centre has appointed Justice Sanjeev Kumar as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh following the elevation of Chief Justice Arun Palli to the Supreme Court. This appointment was made under Article 223 of the Indian Constitution, granting the President the authority to appoint an Acting Chief Justice in case of a vacancy or inability of the Chief Justice to perform duties.
Justice Arun Palli, who previously served as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, has been elevated to the Supreme Court along with three other High Court Chief Justices and senior advocate V. Mohana. The recommendation for their elevation came from the Supreme Court Collegium.
Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointment of Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, and Arun Palli, along with senior advocate V. Mohana, as judges of the Supreme Court. Justice Arun Palli, who was previously the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, assumed office in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in April 2025.
Justice Sanjeev Kumar had previously served as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh before Justice Arun Palli took over as Chief Justice.
