The British-era Kalka-Shimla highway in Himachal Pradesh, undergoing a four-lane upgrade via Parwanoo, is close to completion after over ten years of construction. Driving on the revamped highway is now swift and smooth, albeit missing some colonial landmarks like train crossings and old Shimla memories. The final piece, a tunnel near Kandaghat in Solan district, is the last step towards finishing the project.

The tunnel near Kandaghat, known for its vibrant markets, will streamline traffic flow, saving time for commuters while preserving the town’s bustling atmosphere. Despite delays due to landslides and other issues, the project is now progressing rapidly, especially with the focus on completing the Kandaghat tunnel. Once operational, the highway will offer a picturesque journey through pine forests, over flyovers, and tunnels, enhancing connectivity between the plains and Shimla’s hills.

The highway upgrade project, initiated in 2015 and initially scheduled for completion by 2018, has seen significant milestones achieved. Notably, a viaduct spanning 160 meters was constructed using innovative techniques, showcasing remarkable progress. Ongoing works include the construction of a twin-tube tunnel and a flyover in Kandaghat, aimed at enhancing travel efficiency. The completion of the 88-km four-lane stretch between Shimla and Parwanoo is a major accomplishment, reducing travel time by 17 km.

Infrastructure developments in Himachal Pradesh, including the highway upgrades, are garnering praise for their positive impact on connectivity and travel experiences. Motorists appreciate the improved road network, which not only facilitates smoother journeys but also preserves historical landmarks and local charm along the route. The project’s adherence to timelines and innovative construction methods has been instrumental in enhancing transportation infrastructure in the region.
