The Kalpetta judicial district in Kerala’s Wayanad has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first district in India to operate as a completely paperless court system. This transition signifies a crucial step in India’s efforts towards digitalizing the judicial process. All courts within the district judiciary will now function entirely in a digital format, from case filings to the issuance of final judgments.
This new system encompasses every stage of the judicial process, including pre-trial procedures, evidence recording, interlocutory applications, and final adjudication, all of which will be conducted electronically. Moreover, the integration of Artificial Intelligence-based tools in the judicial process will aid in generating structured case summaries from digital records, facilitating judges in swiftly understanding the factual and procedural aspects of cases.
The introduction of interactive question-and-answer features will enable judicial officers to seek case-specific details, while digital annotation tools will allow judges to make notes and highlight pertinent legal provisions directly on electronic files. Additionally, the implementation of voice-to-text technology ensures precise transcription of witness depositions and judicial dictations, enhancing the accuracy of court proceedings.
Judicial orders and judgments will now be authenticated using secure digital signatures, ensuring their legal validity, integrity, and authenticity. The entire paperless system has been developed internally by the Kerala High Court. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant emphasized the significance of launching this project in Wayanad, an environmentally sensitive region, as a commitment to “green jurisprudence.”
