Actor-politician Kamal Haasan announced that his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), will not participate in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Instead, MNM will offer unconditional support to the DMK-led alliance, citing larger political priorities and the state’s interests.
Haasan highlighted MNM’s earlier collaboration with the DMK-led front during the 2024 Parliamentary elections, emphasizing the party’s commitment to national interests. MNM’s efforts in the alliance have amplified its voice at the national level, leading to representation in the Rajya Sabha.
Despite cordial discussions with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and other DMK representatives, MNM found the seat-sharing negotiations for the upcoming Assembly elections unsatisfactory. The number of seats offered to MNM and the proposal to contest under the DMK’s symbol were not acceptable, as MNM values its independent identity symbolized by the ‘battery torch’.
Expressing the emotional significance of MNM’s symbol, Haasan stressed its role in representing the party’s identity and values developed over nine years. MNM’s decision to prioritize Tamil Nadu’s broader interests over electoral participation reflects a strategic choice to support the alliance for the state’s governance.
